This is the initially neutral stimulus which doesn t generate any significant response in the subject on its own.

Stimulus and response pavlov. However through association with the unconditioned stimulus it s capable of provoking a new response. In pavlov s famous experiment the stimulus was food and the response was salivation. Pavlov s stimulus substitution theory focused on the nature of the conditioned response cr and proposed that conditioning enables the conditioned stimulus cs to elicit the same response as the unconditioned stimulus us therefore the cr and the unconditioned response ur were the same response chance 2013.

Food is the unconditioned stimulus in pavlov s dog experiment. Neutral stimulus metronome no conditioned response. Pavlov s experiment is illustrated in figure 1.

Pavlov began to ring a bell whenever his dogs were fed and over time found that the bell alone without the presence of food could reduce the expected response of salivation. Ivan pavlov stimulus response in 1927 pavlov conducted perhaps one of the most famous psychological experiments when he showed that by pairing a conditioned stimulus a bell with an unconditioned stimulus food a dog would begin to salivate response when the bell was rung without presenting the food. He opted to use food as the unconditioned stimulus or the stimulus that evokes a response naturally and automatically.

A previously neutral stimulus the bell became an eliciting stimulus. By itself the metronome did not elecit a response from the dogs. Next pavlov began the conditioning procedure whereby the clicking metronome was introduced just before he gave food to his dogs.

This is what response naturally occurs when you experience the unconditioned stimulus such as salivating. In his experiment pavlov used a metronome as his neutral stimulus. He believed that all learning depended on the strength of the relationship between the stimulus and the response.

The sound of a metronome was chosen to be the neutral stimulus. When presented with this unconditioned stimulus the dogs would salivate naturally as an unconditioned response. To begin with pavlov had an unconditioned stimulus the dog s food.
